“Cut and Flow”

Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn, NY | 2025

Come take a putt through Gowanus history at “Union Links.”

Artist’s Statement
Our mini-golf installation is a playful yet profound tribute to the enduring dialogue between art, nature, and urban transformation. Drawing on the timeless elegance of modernist landscapes—as epitomized by Dan Kiley, Roberto Burle Marx, Isamu Noguchi, and Charles Jencks—and enriched by the ecological insights of Gowanus’ storied past, the design transforms a simple game into an interactive narrative. It invites players to journey through layered forms that echo the organic flow of historic salt marshes and the crisp precision of contemporary intervention. With each putt, participants engage with a sculptural environment that celebrates both the legacy of visionary landscape architects and the ongoing, dynamic shaping of the canal.

Broad Appeal to a Diverse Audience:
The installation is designed with the local community in mind, offering a playful yet thoughtful experience that resonates with residents, local creatives, and families alike. It celebrates the legacy of influential landscape architects while underscoring the vital, ongoing role of design in shaping the future of the Gowanus Canal, and the eclectic spirit of the Gowanus area—a space where history, art, and urban renewal coalesce in unexpected ways.
It’s more than a game—it is an immersive, sculptural journey that captures the evolving spirit of Gowanus transforming every putt into an invitation to experience art, nature, and history in harmonious dialogue..
